An Announcement from the Co-Founders: OSI Board Changes

Dear OSI Board,

I wanted to share the following press release on the recent changes to our board:Operation Smile 2020 Board

On behalf of the Executive Leadership team at Operation Smile, it is a pleasure to welcome five new members to the Board of Directors. The passion, intellect, insight, and vast experience of all the new Board members will be a true asset in moving Operation Smile forward as we continue to support children and adults born with a cleft condition.

As many of you know, the Board has such an important role, as they take an objective look at all we are doing from a perspective other than where we sit day-to-day.  Their feedback is invaluable, as it comes from people who care about Operation Smile and have been associated with the organization for so long, seeing it in action from an entirely different perspective.

It is my pleasure to welcome and introduce you to our new board members:

Robert Boyd III will serve as Chairman of the Board. He is the owner and President of Boyd Steamship Corporation, a shipping agency and family business founded in 1909 by Robert’s grandfather and his brother. Today, Boyd Steamship Corporation has four offices at the Atlantic and Pacific ports of Panama with 75 employees. Robert helped found Operation Smile Panama and served as its first chairman in 1990. Robert is married to Vasiliki Rusodimos, has four children, and resides in Panama, the Republic of Panama.

Robert has significant academic associations and international relationships with a myriad of countries worldwide.  He shares the heart and soul of Operation Smile, as well as within his own company.  Boyd Steamship Corporation is a major player in vessels passing through the Panama Canal to and from innumerable global ports. His company daily is symbolic of what we, as an organization, allow to happen worldwide.

Dr. Michael Gioffre is a graduate of The University of Maryland Dental School with an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. Michael has been practicing dentistry in Wilmington, Delaware, since 1999. While a dental student at the University of Maryland, he helped coordinate the Operation Smile dental mission in Hanoi.  That first trip to Vietnam, hosted by the University of Maryland dental students and faculty, set the stage for students and faculty from the Vietnam School of Dentistry to come to the University of Maryland to be educated and educate our own students on the importance of global efficacy.  Mike’s groundwork is a significant reason why our relationship with Vietnam has been so strong for over 30 years.
He has since served on numerous Operation Smile dental missions, as a Team Dentist on several medical missions, and as a member of the Operation Smile Dental Council. In 2007, Michael received an Operation Smile Volunteer of the Year Award.

Bruce Smith is a Pro Football Hall of Famer who founded Bruce Smith Enterprise (BSE), a commercial real estate firm specializing in the development of premier mixed-use projects. Headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA, the eponymous company has developed notable properties throughout the Mid-Atlantic region that feature the cohesive and seamless integration of residential, Class A office, guest, and retail space. Bruce strives to align the firm’s dedication to ethical business practice with his various philanthropic endeavors. In 1999, Bruce traveled to Africa with his family as an Ambassador for Operation Smile during the World Journey of Hope.

Bruce is well known in the sports world, as he is in the Football Hall of Fame and has the Lifetime Record of Sacks of Quarterbacks by a Defensive End.  Bruce hung his jersey in the Buffalo stadium amongst the jerseys of a minimal, elite number of athletes that played for the Buffalo Bills. Although those accomplishments are certainly remarkable to us at Operation Smile, the most notable thing about Bruce is the love and commitment he shares with us to care for the children we serve worldwide.

Steve Rodosky is a Managing Director in PIMCO’s Newport Beach, California office and serves as a portfolio manager for the real return and U.S. long-duration strategies. He leads the rates liquid products team and serves as Head of Talent Management for portfolio management in the U.S. Before joining PIMCO in 2001, Steve was Vice President of Institutional Sales with Merrill Lynch. He has 25 years of investment experience and holds a Master’s Degree in financial markets from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He received an undergraduate degree from Villanova University. Steve lives in Newport Beach, California, with his wife Kim, three dogs, and six children. The family has traveled abroad with Operation Smile five times.  He is an exceptional financial manager and a wonderful and caring member of our society, and a remarkable father.

Dr. James Poisant is the Secretary-General of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA). He directs the day-to-day operations of the Alliance. Before joining WITSA, Jim was the Founder and CEO of Poisant International LLC, an internationally recognized events management company. In 1996, Jim was appointed the President and CEO of the 1998 World Congress on Information Technology held in the United States. He’s also the author of “Creating and Sustain a Superior Customer Service Organization.” Jim has a Doctorate and Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Master’s Degree in Urban Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amhurst, MA., and a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Secondary Education from Worcester State College, MA.  Jim is a long-time resident of the state of Virginia, USA, and has given Operation Smile the privilege to speak at three of the International WCIT Conferences.  These conferences bring together acclaimed philanthropists, technology experts, and significant financial experts from a worldwide audience and presidents from numerous countries worldwide. As such, Jim has afforded Operation Smile a significant stage in our worldwide efforts.

We would also like to thank our outgoing Board members as they have completed their tenure on the Board. These individuals have made a tremendous impact on the organization. Despite their departure, we know this group will stay connected to the organization.

On behalf of all of us at Operation Smile, we all wish to express our deep gratitude to these directors instated for many years.  Without their knowledge, skill set, passion, and commitment to Operation Smile, we would not be where we are today.  In one way or another, all of them have been involved with Operation Smile for many years, if not decades, before serving on our board, and there is no way we can thank them enough.
